Rocky Coastal Inlet, oil on canvas, Inez Byland (1890–1961)

A bold and direct oil study of a rocky coastline, the foreground dominated by tumbled ochre and grey boulders giving way to a deep cobalt inlet, with warm rust-coloured cliffs receding into the distance under a luminous pale sky. Byland was a Swedish painter whose working life spanned the early and mid twentieth century, and this confident, gestural work reflects the modernist landscape tradition that flourished across Scandinavia during that period. The handling is loose and assured, the rocks rendered with blocky impasto strokes that convey both weight and texture. Presented in its original distressed silvered frame.
